NEW: Zuma lands high-profile role at the United Nations

President Jacob Zuma has been appointed to co-chair a United Nations High-Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth alongside President François Hollande of France.

The appointment by the United Nations Secretary-General‚ Ban Ki-moon‚ is aimed at stimulating the creation of new employment opportunities in the health sector across all countries‚ especially in least developed countries.















Zuma said in a statement: "The focus of this Commission goes to the heart of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development‚ which we adopted in September last year‚ and which could go a long way in helping to address the triple challenge of unemployment‚ poverty and inequality."

NEW: WhatsApp to kill support for BlackBerry, Nokia

Instant messaging application WhatsApp plans to discontinue support for its service on older smartphone systems such as BlackBerry and Nokia.





















In a blog post on the weekend, WhatsApp said it will kill support for its app on the following operating systems by the end of 2016: BlackBerry (including BlackBerry 10), Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 and Windows Phone 7.1.

NEW: NUM Warns Of Massive Job Losses In Coming Months

South Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Monday more than 36,000 jobs were under threat in the embattled industry over the next three months.















Last week, Anglo American announced it would be cutting up to 2,000 jobs at its Union and Twickenham mines, as part of a proposed restructuring process.

The NUM said it’s already facilitating talks with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) aimed at reducing the number of workers affected and to ensure that fair retrenchments, where they can’t avoided.

NEW: Eddie Izzard completes first of 27 marathons for Sport Relief

The comedian is running a marathon a day for the next 27 days - one for each year Nelson Mandela spent in prison.
 












"The first 10 are always the hardest, but then your body and your brain gets used to it so it gets easier," he told the BBC.

Izzard previously attempted a similar feat in South Africa in 2012, but had to pull out for health reasons.

NEW: The secret's out - SA to get a sugar tax

South Africans with a sweet tooth will be punished with a higher tax on sweet stuff.

In his budget speech on Wednesday, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced that a sugar tax will be levied with effect from 1 April 2017.




















A sugar tax has been mooted by a growing number of consumer bodies and health experts who have been calling for a tax on sweetened sugar beverages (SSBs) to help curb the tide of obesity in SA, which is the foremost cause of obesity in Sub-saharan Africa.

NEW: Colourblind campaign takes off after racial tensions at Tuks

As racial tensions continue at universities across the country, students at the University of Pretoria have taken a stand against the rage with a social media campaign that’s got many talking.















The campaign urges students to “take a picture of themselves, with a person of another race, in grey-scale with a poster stating: #ColourBlind”.

“These students [in the photos] have made a decision to stand up and raise their voice in the form of a peaceful protest against any forms of racism,” the Facebook page states.

“I am thankful for God for keeping me alive and safe during that difficult time. Although I did not get food and water for four days, His grace was still enough for me," Lizel Molefe, 16, said.

NEW: Van Rooyen was most qualified for finance minister job - Zuma

Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister David van Rooyen was the best qualified candidate to serve as South Africa’s finance minister, President Jacob Zuma said on Monday.














“That thing caused such a havoc. It caused such havoc and people think Zuma just woke up one day and and took a decision. Some say he was told by some people [to appoint Van Rooyen as finance minister in December],” Zuma told delegates at the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Press Corps in Pretoria.

NEW: Zuma found out about Cosatu objections after he signed tax bill

When President Jacob Zuma signed the Taxation Laws Amendment Act late last year he wasn’t aware of Cosatu’s objections with regard to the proposed annuitisation of provident fund benefits.

















“The concerns were only brought to the President’s attention after he had signed the bill,” said Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe.

At a post-cabinet briefing on Thursday morning Radebe had to field a barrage of questions from journalists about the postponement of the provident fund rules in the legislation.

NEW: Historic Cape Town park to be revived

A historic part of Cape Town will be revived in an integrated project between the communities of District Six, Woodstock and the City of Cape Town.

Trafalgar Park, formally established in 1905 for the residents of District Six, was then known as the East End Plantation, the City said in a statement.






















The three-hectare park then consisted of a garden, similar to the Company’s Garden at the time, with flower beds, a rose garden and pine trees which stretched to the lower slopes of Table Mountain.

NEW: SA bank stocks regain billions lost when Zuma fired Nene

South Africa’s banks index rose in Johannesburg to levels not seen since before President Jacob Zuma unexpectedly fired Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene in December, causing lenders including FirstRand and the local unit of Barclays to plummet by records.























The seven-member FTSE/JSE Africa Banks Index climbed as much as 4.2% on Thursday in the city to its highest since December 4.

NEW: Reserve Bank Could Hike Interest Rates Again

New figures released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) today show Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) has now breached the Reserve Bank's target range of between three and six percent, which may mean the Reserve Bank may hike interest rates again.

NEW: Anonymous Hacks South African Government

Anonymous is at the hacktivist game again, this time targeting South African government as part of its #OpAfrica initiative.














The group hacked a database within the Government Communications and Information Systems (GCIS) department, leaking names, phone numbers, email addresses and hashed passwords of more than 1,000 government employees.

The hackers gained access to an old GCIS portal that hadn’t been updated; South Africa said that the vulnerability has been tracked down and closed.

The family of Generations: The Legacy actor Rapulana Seiphemo says he’s in a stable condition and showing positive signs of recovery following his car crash.
















Seiphemo was rushed to the Milpark Hospital on Sunday night, after he was involved in an accident that left two people dead.

The actor was one of three people injured in the collision on the N14 near Centurion.

EFF president Julius Malema on Tuesday apologised for maligning former presidents Thabo Mbeki and Nelson Mandela, saying President Jacob Zuma had misled him.

NEW: Lion savages man in Zimbabwe prayer vigil

Wildlife rangers in northern Zimbabwe are tracking a lion that allegedly mauled a man taking part in an outdoor prayer meeting near Lake Kariba, a conservation group reported on Tuesday.














The man, who has not been named, suffered a "deep cut" to his chest, but was recovering, said the Kariba Animal Welfare Trust (KAWFT) in a post on Facebook.

NEW: Prayers for Rapulana Seiphemo in hospital

The Department of Arts and Culture led an outpouring of ‘get well soon’ messages on Monday afternoon for Generations actor Rapulana Seiphemo‚ who is said to be in a critical but stable condition in a private Johannesburg hospital after a serious car crash last night.

















Paramedics from ER24 said that two men were killed and four others were injured after two vehicles collided on the N14 near the R55‚ near Diepsloot‚ north of Johannesburg. The injured patients were treated and rushed to hospital.

“Wishing Rapulana Seiphemo a speedy recovery. Get well soon‚ the industry needs you‚” the Department of Arts and Culture said on Twitter.

NEW: SA's 2015 Maize Output Falls to Lowest in 8 Years

South Africa’s 2015 maize output fell to its lowest level in eight years after an El Niño-induced drought scorched crops across key planting areas, a government agency said on Thursday.
















The Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) said in its final figures maize totalled 9.955 million tonnes compared with 14.25 million tonnes a year earlier.

NEW: From Gazankulu to the Pretoria High Court Chambers - how a rural girl became top legal mind

Forty years ago, Gandlanani in the former homeland of Gazankulu was a village where girl children were not schooled, married off at thirteen and subjected to extreme poverty.

But there were exceptions, like Nana Makhubele who last year became the first black African woman to chair a society of advocates in South Africa.

















Though Makhubele knew the struggles of poverty very well, her mother and a fortunate series of circumstances set her on another path.

“Being a girl and depending on how soon you reached puberty, you will undergo a compulsory female ritual. We [call it] uKomba. It's like a female version of the male circumcision. We don't go to the mountains, [uKomba] happens in the families," Makhubele explained the tradition of her childhood home.

NEW: 'I kind of gave up on Harvard' - Umlazi teen who won scholarship

A KwaZulu-Natal teenager, through persistence and perseverance, will be attending the prestigious Harvard University in the United States after being accepted on a full scholarship for 2016.
















Mfundo Radebe, 18, an Umlazi resident, was awarded an all expenses scholarship worth $69 000 per year to study political sciences. The straight A student spoke to News24, saying it was diligence and a hunger for wanting more that saw him accepted to Harvard.

According to the teen, he planned his future since the tender age of 13 when he was at Addington Primary School.

This was the recollection of Umhlanga Sands Guest Services manager Meresh Sukdeo, who has been lauded as a hero after resuscitating a 7-year-old boy who nearly drowned in the beachfront resort's pool at the weekend.
