NEW: Some Relief As The Rand Strengthens

The rand has strengthened with the news of an interest rate hike of 50 basis points this afternoon.

The local currency is now sitting at around R16.18 to the dollar.

Some economists say they expected today's hike based on rising inflation. The increase puts the repo rate at 6.75 percent and prime lending rates at 10.25 percent.
