NEW: Reserve Bank Hikes Repo Rate By 50 Basis Points

South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) governor Lesetja Kganyago said on Thursday the bank would increase the repo rate by 50 basis points.














This means the repo rate, which is the rate at which the Sarb lends money to banks, will rise to 6.75%.

The prime lending rate, the figure charged by banks to customers, will increase to 10.25%.

NEW: Some Relief As The Rand Strengthens

The rand has strengthened with the news of an interest rate hike of 50 basis points this afternoon.

The local currency is now sitting at around R16.18 to the dollar.















Some economists say they expected today's hike based on rising inflation. The increase puts the repo rate at 6.75 percent and prime lending rates at 10.25 percent.

NEW: Fransman must step down - ANC

ANC Western Cape chairperson Marius Fransman has been directed by national officials to step down pending the finalisation of the investigation into the alleged sexual assault charges laid against him.




















"The national officials, seized with the supervision of the ANC constitution, having considered the representations from ANC structures referred the matter to the NWC [national working committee]," ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa told News24.

NEW: South Africa To Send Their Fastest Ever Sprinters To Portland

National record-holders Anaso Jobodwana and Henricho Bruintjies feature on South Africa’s team for the IAAF World Indoor Championships Portland 2016.

Of the 11 members of the all-men’s team, 10 of them – including Jobodwana – will be making their IAAF World Indoor Championships debut. Jobodwana set a national record of 19.87 when taking the bronze medal at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015 to go alongside the national indoor record of 20.47 he set in 2013. Last year he set a 60m PB of 6.60.


















Fellow sprinter Henricho Bruintjies has never competed indoors, but last year set a South African 100m record of 9.97, a mark that was equalled a few days later by Akani Simbine.

NEW: Gautrain Confirms It's Planning A Massive Extension

There’s good news for Gauteng commuters as the Gautrain management agency is planning to extend rail routes by 200 kilometres.

The first link may be ready in about six years.

















Forty-eight new train coaches are needed to keep up with growing passenger numbers and seven companies have already expressed interest in designing and manufacturing them.

NEW: This photograph of a potato sold for almost R18m

A photograph of a humble potato has reportedly been sold for €1m, equivalent to almost R18m.

















According to the Irish Times, the Irish photographer, Kevin Abosch, sold one of the three prints of his photograph to a European businessman who showed interest in purchasing it during a visit to the photographer’s Paris home.

The photograph sold for a non-negotiable €1m, making it Abosch’s largest sale on a single image.

NEW: MTN, Vodacom Call For WhatsApp & Skype To Be Regulated

Mobile operators Vodacom and MTN have strongly argued for so-called Over-The-Top (OTT) services, such as WhatsApp and Skype, to be regulated.

But competitor Cell C has taken a different line at today’s hearings hosted by Parliament’s Telecommunications and Postal Services Committee.

















MTN and Vodacom first made the call for OTT players to be subjected to regulation late last year, arguing that they make no contribution to investment in infrastructure and are not subject to the same regulations and controls that apply to South African operators.

NEW: Rabada magic inspires Proteas win

Kagiso Rabada took four wickets on Tuesday morning - and 13 in the match - as South Africa cruised to a 280-run victory over England in the fourth and final Test in Centurion.

Despite the result, England win the series 2-1.

















England started the day on 52/3 with Joe Root and James Taylor at the wicket, but it was not long before the Proteas had something to cheer on the final morning when a scorcher from Morne Morkel in just the third over of the day had Taylor caught behind for 24.

South Africa has the highest rate of cybercrime on the continent‚ a report by Cisco revealed on Monday.

Cisco Annual Security report said that “today’s attackers launch more sophisticated‚ bold and resilient campaigns”.

















Greg Griessel‚ Consulting Systems Engineer Security Solutions at Cisco South Africa‚ said: “Cyber criminals are getting smarter and employing a number of personalised tactics‚ which places businesses at greater risk. 92% of business leaders agree that regulators and investors will expect companies to manage cyber-security risk exposure. These leaders need to essentially increase measures to secure their organizations’ future‚ particularly as they digitize their operations.”

NEW: Customer finds 'something extra' in Woolies Frankfurters

Yet another unhappy Woolworths customer has taken to their Facebook page displaying a shocking finding inside a pack of Frankfurters.

Anuschka Vorster Nagy‎ posted a picture of pieces of what appear to be plastic inside the Frankfurters onto the Woolworths Facebook page.






















In the post she said: “I am a regular customers at Woolies. Imagine my horror when I found this embedded in my Frankfurters. Which by the way is what I give my kids for lunch.

NEW: SA actress hailed a hero for tracking down lost wallet's owner

Not all heroes wear capes... some are just normal South African citizens who love doing good.





















That was proved by South African actress Andrea SebeLabenguni Dondolo, who touched the hearts of many South Africans last week when she set out to track down a man who had left his wallet in a trolley at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday.

The wallet had a couple of hundred rands in it, cards and a small ID-photo sized picture of the man.

NEW: Rhino poaching levels in South Africa fell in 2015

The number of rhino being killed by poachers in South Africa dipped slightly in 2015, in the first sign that the country may be turning the corner in the fight against the lucrative illegal trade.















The number killed each year for their horn increased every year from 13 in 2007 to a record 1,215 in 2014, driven by demand in Asia that has made it worth more than gold.

The country’s environment minister hailed the stabilisation to 1,175 deaths in 2015 as a positive step, but conservationists warned the number was still unacceptably high.

NEW: Gauteng Motorists Warned Of Flash Flooding

Motorists are being warned of flash flooding in some parts of Johannesburg this afternoon.

The South African Weather Service says Gauteng residents can expect wet weather conditions both today and tomorrow.
















Johannesburg emergency service’s Robert Mulaudzi said, “We advise people to avoid flooded roads and also not to try and cross flooded bridges as to avoid incidents where vehicles might be swept away by the water.”

NEW: Heroic bull terrier saves Cape Town woman from cobra

A loyal bull terrier put his life on the line after he attacked and killed a cobra that had found its way into his owner’s garage.






















Tracey Jacobs wrote to Cape Town radio station KFM to say she saw the snake after exiting her car on Friday afternoon.

She explained how her bull terrier, Dexter, “immediately grabbed it and fought it out of the garage”.

NEW: Calls For Govt To Immediately Repeal New Tax Amendment Laws

South Africa’s biggest union has called on government to immediately repeal the tax amendment laws, describing the new legislation as the privatisation of workers' money.

















The National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (Numsa) has also accused the State of trying to use workers provident funds to help cover the shortfall of an inadequate social welfare system.

President Jacob Zuma this month signed the Tax Administration Amendment Bill, which will prevent the withdrawal of a provident fund lump sum payments from 1 March.

NEW: SA Property Prices Face Deflation Over Next 12 Months

South Africa's residential property market is facing a price deflation in the next twelve months due to the weakening rand and concerns about economic growth.














Economists have been warning consumers to cut back on expenses this year, after the rand hit an all-time low against the dollar two weeks ago. The rand slumped to a level of R17,99 against the US dollar.

NEW: Outa takes aim at nuclear and SAA

The group that has stood up against e-tolls is widening its scope to challenge poor governance, maladministration and corruption around South Africa.













The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) will expand its fight against e-tolls to include campaigns that will focus on government’s alleged misuse of taxpayers’ funds, such as the nuclear energy procurement plan, Eskom’s tariff hikes and the constant taxpayer bailout at South African Airways (SAA), it said on Saturday.

Outa will now stand for Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse, chairperson Wayne Duvenage said.
