NEW: Zimbabwe to expand use of yuan as China cancels $40 million debt

Zimbabwe said Monday that China plans to cancel $40 million in debts as the southern African country seeks to expand use of the yuan in its multi-currency economy.

Chinamasa also announced that Zimbabwe will officially make the Chinese yuan legal tender as it seeks to increase trade with Beijing. Zimbabwe abandoned its own dollar in 2009 after hyperinflation, which had peaked at around 500 billion percent, rendered it unusable.

Grain South Africa says the cost of importing maize into the country has increased by 15 percent since President Jacob Zuma fired Nhlanhla Nene as finance minister and the accumulated increase for the season is estimated at R3 million.

NEW: Stop exaggerating SA's problems: Zuma

"We exaggerate our problems and make people think that South Africans are funny people; whilst in reality people envy to be South Africans," he said during an address celebrating Reconciliation Day at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth.

In one of South Africa’s stranger public holiday commemorations on Wednesday, thousands gathered in various cities to participate in #ZumaMustFall marches, while President Jacob Zuma himself called for people not to exaggerate the country’s problems for fear of being considered "funny".

Zuma faced a backlash after he announced last week that he was replacing Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene with ANC MP Des van Rooyen. There was a public outcry and calls for Zuma to be recalled over the move, which saw the rand reach record lows. Four days after the announcement Zuma backtracked, replacing Van Rooyen with Pravin Gordhan as finance minister, which saw the rand recover somewhat.

NEW: Nhlanhla Nene removed as finance minister

President Jacob Zuma took an unprecedented step on Wednesday night by dismissing Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene – barely two years after he took office.

In a shocking move that saw the rand plummeting to below R15 to the US dollar, Zuma appointed a relatively unknown backbencher David ‘Des’ van Rooyen – who served as a member of the finance committee in Parliament – to replace Nene. Nene has been at loggerheads with SAA chair Dudu Myeni – who serves as thechairperson of the president Jacob Zuma’s education trust.

NEW: The Muslims who shaped America

What have Muslims ever done for America? If your sole source of information were Donald Trump, you’d think the answer was not much – apart from murdering its citizens and trying to destroy its values. The Republican presidential hopeful has called for a halt to Muslims entering the United States until American authorities “can figure out” Muslim attitudes to the US in the wake of last week’s killings in San Bernardino. If only, you might well think, Scotland had had the same thought about Trump before he was allowed in to blight Aberdeenshire with another of his golf resorts.

What Trump doesn’t seem to grasp is his country’s history, and how many American achievements worth celebrating are the work of the kind of people – Muslims – he wants to keep out.

Here, then, is a guide to some of the things Muslims have done for the US. It’s not an exhaustive list, but it’s still more impressive than what Trump has done for his homeland.
