NEWS: Helen Zille sees an unprecedented crisis in the South African media

DA leader Helen Zille says media freedom in South Africa is under serious threat.

There was an uproar last week when the Western Cape government cancelled its subscription to the Cape Times and Zille, a former journalist, was blamed.

In her latest newsletter, Zille defends the decision, accusing the newspaper of inaccuracies, plagiarism and bias.

She asks why so many journalists and the South African National Editors’ Forum don’t, instead, concentrate on what she describes as the ANC’s media capture.

Zille says even under apartheid, the country had not seen examples such as what she calls the outrageous and unlawful subsidies paid by the state to the New Age newspaper, run by the Gupta family.

She also accuses Communications Minister Faith Muthambi of attempting to turn the SABC into a party political broadcaster and a state-owned enterprise.
