The
widow of slain Nelson Mandela Bay church leader and sports
administrator Vuyisile Koom spoke out yesterday about her torment
following the conviction of her husband’s killers.
Nonkosi Koom, 55, a teacher for the past 34 years, said it hurt deeply that she had taught Nyameko Gebengwana, 29, for years at Tamsanqa High School in Kwazakhele.
Acting Judge Bulelwa NomjanaNdzondo found Gebengwana, and Bathandwa Ngqonga, 36, guilty of Koom’s murder on April 29 2011.
Not only had she taught Gebengwana English as a Grade 8 and 9 pupil, but she had also been his class teacher for two years.
Koom
was killed when three men barged into their family home. A struggle
ensued and he was severely beaten while his wife escaped and alerted
neighbours.
“What saddens me the most is that as educators we have the important role of moulding our pupils into becoming better people.
“Seeing
someone that you have taught and seeing what he has become, and knowing
that he is going to jail for a very long time, hurts me as a teacher,”
she said.
The two men will be sentenced tomorrow.
