The Red Ants are known for evicting people and demolishing illegal dwellings but last week the company built around 500 shacks for the destitute community of the Platform Five informal settlement in downtown Johannesburg.
Those shacks will now have to be demolished after a dispute erupted between the City of Johannesburg and Metrorail.
It’s understood the property is owned by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) which says the dwellings cannot be re-erected on its land.
The City of Joburg’s Nthatisi Modingoane says they are seeking alternative land to replace around 500 families.
“Prasa has indicated that they do not want people to rebuild. The city is going to be engaging with leaders to look at a new relocation space. Our intervention is to try deal with the disaster.”
