NEWS: Half of SA schools still use pit toilets

Pit toilets are still used in 11,646 of the more than 23,000 schools nationwide.



CAPE TOWN - It’s emerged that nearly half of South Africa's public schools still use pit toilets.

This was revealed by the Basic Education Ministry in a written reply to a Democratic Alliance (DA) question in Parliament.

Eyewitness News this week reported that some schools in the Eastern Cape still don't have adequate furniture despite assurances by President Jacob Zuma in his State of the Nation Address that furniture would be delivered by the middle of this month.

Pit toilets are still used in 11,646 of the more than 23,000 schools nationwide.

Most of the schools that still use pit latrines are in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Moreover, 518 schools in KwaZulu-Natal also don't have access to electricity.

The DA says most provinces are not meeting their infrastructure targets, forcing pupils to endure appalling conditions.

The opposition party says pit toilets breed disease and are dangerous.
