Couple helps homeless family
An East London woman who ekes out a living braaing food at a popular beachfront leisure spot, has taken in a homeless white Afrikaans family who recently arrived in the city.Khulukazi Ndwanya, lives with her unemployed husband and their two young orphans, a sixmonth-old girl and six-year-old boy.
If providing for them was not hard enough, the mother with a heart of gold said she could not bear to see the plight of the stranded white couple and their two children.
Stuart Jacobs and his wife, Lettie, arrived in East London last Saturday from Limpopo with their life’s belongings in just two suitcases. Their daughters – Angelique, 8, and Monique, 13 – were by their side.
Jacobs, a handyman, said he had been unable to find work and had decided to relocate elsewhere in search of a better life for his family.
“We left Limpopo by train after selling the small household goods we had to come and settle in East London,” he said.
“We arrived on Saturday afternoon and spent the night at the Fleet Street police station.
“On Sunday we searched for a place with lots of people and ended up at the beachfront.”
The couple spent time at Ebuhlanti and became desperate for accommodation as sunset drew closer.
Ndwanya, who was braaing meat nearby, said she grew anxious when she noticed the couple were stranded.
“I approached them and inquired about their situation and after hearing their plight I alerted my husband at home. “I was worried about their safety, especially the young girls who were barefoot at the time,” she said.
“Ebuhlanti can be very dangerous for strangers at night and I would not forgive myself if anything happened to the family.
“The girls were terrified and in need of shelter.”
Ndwanya said when they arrived home Monique dropped to her knees and said “thank you mama”.
