The New Age newspaper reported that the deputy minister of higher education and training, Mduduzi Manana, “released shocking statistics that revealed that about 41% of students in further education and training (FET) colleges were HIV positive” when he addressed students of the Taletso FET college in Lichtenburg in September.
If the statistic was correct, the HIV prevalence rate among students would be nearly four times the national estimate of 11.2%. Could it be?
