NEW: I'm not optimistic about the country, its leaders or economy - Jonathan Jansen

With few exceptions, South Africa is run by people without the competencies to do so - this according to the University of the Free State's Rector and Vice Chancellor Jonathan Jansen.

Although Jansen says he is not optimistic about the country, its leaders or the economy, he is optimistic about investments in basic education.
















If pupils are given a chance to learn to enjoy science and mathematics then, says Jansen, we'll have the opportunity to "pull the country straight".
