People living in slums were being asked to share their experiences and knowledge on this year's World Habitat Day, under the theme "Voices from Slums".
According to UN-Habitat, the UN agency dedicated to urbanization issues, a quarter of the world's urban population is living in slums.
Joan Clos, the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, says the goal is to raise awareness of their life conditions.
He notes they live in crowded, poor spaces, with little access to water and sanitation.
UN-Habitat is also highlighting that people in slums are disproportionately affected by climate change, with houses often built with inadequate materials.
The agency adds that through hearing the real stories of slum dwellers, it is possible to show decision makers that upgrading programmes can create better lives for all.
