NEWS: Tackling bucket toilets in PE

The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality has resolved to end the infamous bucket system by June next year.

A recent report by Statistics South Africa showed that bucket system usage had increased by 24.2% in the past year.

Spokesperson for the municipality Kupkio Barons said that a public participation process would start this month
to discuss an implementation process for a water and sanitation plan which would cost an estimated R118.2m.

"The interim approach to build a flush toilet and  a foundation will allow people to wait for formal house in more
dignified circumstances," director of infrastructure, engineering, electricity and energy at the municipality, Dr Walter Shaidi said.

The municipality budgeted R80m for this year and next year and plans to pilot the facilities in Nelson Mandela Bay.

During the construction, each unit can create up 10 job opportunities that equates 2,500 temporary jobs during the construction phase and 250 cooperatives could be created to operate the communal ablutions under a managing contractor to ensure the transfer of business skills.
