A
Pretoria pastor and police chaplain says his nomination for a gospel
music award has been God’s way of helping him through his wife’s death.
As
preparations for the seventh annual Crown Gospel Music Awards, taking
place at the Durban ICC arena on November 23, get under way, Tshwane
has its own finalist representing the city.
Captain Jonas Masotla of the SAPS has been nominated for the best newcomer award with his first album titled Emmanuel.
Masotla
said being nominated for his first album was like God’s way of helping
him heal after losing his wife Elizabeth Masotla after 23 years of
marriage earlier this year.
“My
wife was my biggest supporter and critic and wouldn’t just praise
everything I did, so when I sing I dedicate my singing to her and our
three children,” he said.
Masotla,
who also ministers at the Worship Centre community church in Mamelodi,
has been involved with music for some time and has served as chaplain
of the Saps for 24 years.
“My
album is called Emmanuel as that was one of the songs I loved singing
to my mother as a child. This being my first offering, I didn’t think
it would be as well received as it has,” he said.
Masotla said his favourite song of the 17-track album was His Power which he wrote during a tough period in his life.
“I
lost my wife in May and I feel having God steered my gift forward is
almost healing me as I am dedicating this to her (my wife).”
