NEWS: SA’s electricity is still cheap, experts say

SA’s electricity tariffs remain well below those of most other countries and are among the lowest in Africa, despite a series of steep increases, energy analysts Frost & Sullivan say in a report published on Thursday.

The study backs up the assertion often made by Eskom that its tariffs are low by global standards.
Electricity tariffs have risen at a rate higher than inflation since 2006 from a modest increase of 5.1% to a peak of 31.3% in 2009-10, according to the report.

In a comparison of 26 countries from Europe and Africa in 2011, SA’s residential electricity prices were the seventh lowest and industrial prices the third lowest.

In a 2014 comparison of 12 countries in Africa, tariffs were the third lowest, with only Egypt and Zambia enjoying lower prices.

"Information obtained from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and past Frost & Sullivan analysis, proves Eskom’s claim to be true. Frost & Sullivan further identified that South African tariffs are comparatively low, not only in the industrial sector, but in the residential sector as well," the report said.
