NEWS: Three reasons you should be wary of free Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi is almost everywhere nowadays. Coffee shops, libraries and even airports have installed hotspots to feed the growing demand for ubiquitous Wi-Fi. While convenient to use, there are hidden security risks you should know about.



1. Packet sniffing: Remember, the Wi-Fi you are connecting to is shared with others, which substantially increases your risk of becoming a victim.

Shared connections allow others to read your data and track your online activity. Sensitive information, such as your username and password, can be captured in the process. Since most people use the same username and password for multiple accounts, the risk is magnified. An attacker could steal your credentials and compromise far more than your Twitter or Facebook account. They may even gain access to your financial records or other private information.

NEWS: Terminally ill man wins right to assisted death

The High Court in Pretoria on Thursday granted a terminally ill man the right to end his own life, with the help of a doctor.



Robin Stransham-Ford was granted an order that allows a doctor to help him commit suicide and the doctor shall not be subject to prosecution or disciplinary proceedings.

“The applicant is entitled to be assisted by a medical practitioner either by the administration of a lethal agent or by providing the applicant with the necessary lethal agent to administer himself,” said Judge Hans Fabricius.

Stransham-Ford (65) a former advocate, was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer in September 2013, and had hoped that Judge Fabricius would hand down an order to allow a doctor to give him drugs that he would use to end his own life.

NEWS: Nepal Quake: 1 million children in need of help

JOHANNESBURG - The death toll from Saturday’s earthquake in Nepal has reached 4,800 with officials now saying more than 9,200 people have been injured and one million children are in urgent need of help.

 

Heartbreaking scenes of suffering and loss are playing out across the nation as it reels from its deadliest natural disaster in more than 80 years.

Aid groups, including South Africa’s Gift of the Givers Foundation and at least 16 nations have rushed to Nepal with more on the way.

NEWS: Jayde Panayiotou's husband arrested for her murder

CAPE TOWN - Jayde Panayiotou's husband is the 28-year-old suspect who was arrested for her murder.



Several sources said Panayiotou's spouse was taken in for questioning late on Wednesday night and is due to appear in court on Monday.

Eastern Cape police made two arrests and the first suspect, Thando Siyoli (31) appeared in court this morning and police are adamant they have a prima facie case against both.

NEWS: Peace and calm returns to South Africa

Peace and calm have returned to communities wracked by xenophobic violence in recent weeks, according to Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe, who sought to reassure the country and the world following the attacks on foreign nationals.

"We want to reassure those who have plans to travel to South Africa that our government is in charge. The violence has stopped. We are now working hard to ensure that nobody within the borders of our country is victimised based on their country of origin," Radebe said. He was speaking at the first Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) briefing on migration held in Pretoria on 28 April. The IMC was appointed by President Jacob Zuma to deal with the underlying causes of tension between communities and foreign nationals. The briefing was called after the president and various ministers consulted various organisations and sectors representing both South Africans and foreign nationals in the country following the earlier this month. Radebe said the government continued to actively support displaced foreign nationals in the country through provision of food, shelter and other necessities. The Department of Social Development was leading the intervention and psychosocial support had been provided to 812 individuals on site at the shelters.

NEWS: New app launched to fight xenophobia

As part of its own anti-xenophobia campaign‚ the Department of Science and Technology on Friday launched an online application where people can both pledge their support against xenophobia and also report incidents thereof.

The app is currently available (www.weareafrica.mobi) through a web browser but will be available on android systems by next week. The developers at Mobile Lab‚ a mobile solutions laboratory located at Tshwane’s Innovation Hub‚ said they would increase the app’s features for information sharing on all platforms as user information came in.

The app could soon be used to assist in police investigations. Mobile Lab CEO Derrick Kotze says as ethical and legal considerations around what constituted police evidence still needed to be investigated. He said the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) was in discussions on the topic with stakeholders.

NEWS: Born frees celebrate 21 years of democracy

Pretoria - Hundreds of young people were among the masses who came to the Union Buildings to celebrate Freedom Day on Monday.



News24 spoke to some of the youngsters who explained what Freedom Day means to them.
Leah Khumalo, 22, who travelled from Johannesburg for the festivities said she did not think much about Freedom Day.

"Freedom day particularly I don't think much of it really. Freedom on the other hand I value a lot," she said.
