NEWS: NEW: South African pastor killed in Afghanistan suicide bombing

A church in Pretoria is reeling after their part-time pastor, Werner Groenewald, and his two teenage children were killed in a suicide bombing by the Taliban in Afghanistan on Saturday.

“We are in shock,” said Willem Badenhorst, pastor for the Moreleta Park Dutch Reformed Church in Pretoria East.  “It is a very, very difficult time for us and the congregation.”

Groenwald, 46, was based in the Afghan capital Kabul for several years, according to Badenhorst. He lived in the country with his wife and two children, a 17-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter who were both killed in the attack, which lasted for several hours.

NEWS: Kabul killings: SA family not secret missionaries

Kabul - The latest Taliban strike in Kabul killed a South African father running an education charity and his two teenage children, a family spokesperson said on Sunday, as the city police chief resigned after a spate of attacks.





With the US-led Nato war against the Taliban nearing its end, the insurgents have targeted foreign guest houses, embassy vehicles, US troops and a female member of parliament in recent weeks.

Werner Groenewald, 46, his son Jean-Pierre, 17, and daughter Rode, 15, were killed in Saturday's attack on the compound of Partnership in Academics and Development (PAD), a small California-based education group.

NEWS: Don't wait on God's help - Zuma

God has not turned his back on the continent but Africans should stop waiting for their prayers to be answered, President Jacob Zuma said on Friday.

The president was addressing the fourth Pan-African Youth Leadership Summit in Boksburg on Gauteng’s East Rand where he told delegates they have not been cursed by a higher power.

Zuma says God is not responsible for the mayhem unfolding in some parts of the continent.

"We must not think, as people at times tend to, that we are cursed. God turned his back on us? No, it’s not so. God is sitting peacefully in heaven. He is not worried about what is happening here."

NEWS: No burning of 'impepho' for Zuma's wife as she becomes a born again Christian

Nompumelelo Ntuli Zuma has apparently turned to Christianity, and shied away from the cultural and traditional beliefs she used to engage in.

According to Drum magazine, president Jacob Zuma's wife, Ma Ntuli, has turned to Christianity, spurning the traditional practises that she once embraced.]




The weekly reports that Ma Ntuli has informed the president's family of her religious affiliation and told them she would not engage in traditional practises which include praising the ancestors, slaughtering of animals for ceremonies and the burning of 'impepho' (incense).

NEWS: Big drop in petrol price announced

It will cost you 69 cents a litre less.



The price of diesel (0.05 percent sulphur) would decrease by 53.50 cents a litre, and that of diesel (0.005 percent sulphur) by 54.30 cents a litre.

The new prices would come into effect on Wednesday.

NEWS: Women's empowerment 'key to stopping violence'

Only a radical shift in approaches to end gender violence will bring about change, says Gender Links, a South African based non-governmental organisation that promotes gender equality across the 15 countries in southern Africa.

Under the banner, "Peace begins at home: End violence! Empower women!", the organisation is calling for change as part of South Africa's 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, which was launched by the government on 25 November. "

Gender violence is a symptom of a much deeper malaise – the gender inequality that pervades every aspect of our lives," says Colleen Lowe Morna, the chief executive of Gender Links.

"We cannot talk about ending violence without talking about women's political, economic and social empowerment."

NEWS: Zuma: Jesus must come again to deal with us & cleanse us

JOHANNESBURG – President Jacob Zuma says the country has lost its moral compass and society has more sinners now compared to decades ago when he was still a young man.




Zuma today launched this year’s 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign in Reiger Park on the East Rand.

The president called for divine intervention, saying pastors must ask Jesus to “change his plan” and come down to earth once again to deal with the high number of sinners.

“We don’t know when Jesus is coming to fetch us. When he was still on earth the sinners were not as many as they are now. He must come again to deal with us and cleanse us. ”
