NEW: Prayers for Rapulana Seiphemo in hospital

The Department of Arts and Culture led an outpouring of ‘get well soon’ messages on Monday afternoon for Generations actor Rapulana Seiphemo‚ who is said to be in a critical but stable condition in a private Johannesburg hospital after a serious car crash last night.

Paramedics from ER24 said that two men were killed and four others were injured after two vehicles collided on the N14 near the R55‚ near Diepsloot‚ north of Johannesburg. The injured patients were treated and rushed to hospital.

“Wishing Rapulana Seiphemo a speedy recovery. Get well soon‚ the industry needs you‚” the Department of Arts and Culture said on Twitter.

NEW: SA's 2015 Maize Output Falls to Lowest in 8 Years

South Africa’s 2015 maize output fell to its lowest level in eight years after an El Niño-induced drought scorched crops across key planting areas, a government agency said on Thursday.

The Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) said in its final figures maize totalled 9.955 million tonnes compared with 14.25 million tonnes a year earlier.

The crop, a staple among 90 percent of South Africa’s population, is forecast to be slightly above domestic consumption of about eight million tonnes a year.

NEW: From Gazankulu to the Pretoria High Court Chambers - how a rural girl became top legal mind

Forty years ago, Gandlanani in the former homeland of Gazankulu was a village where girl children were not schooled, married off at thirteen and subjected to extreme poverty.

But there were exceptions, like Nana Makhubele who last year became the first black African woman to chair a society of advocates in South Africa.

Though Makhubele knew the struggles of poverty very well, her mother and a fortunate series of circumstances set her on another path.

“Being a girl and depending on how soon you reached puberty, you will undergo a compulsory female ritual. We [call it] uKomba. It's like a female version of the male circumcision. We don't go to the mountains, [uKomba] happens in the families," Makhubele explained the tradition of her childhood home.

NEW: 'I kind of gave up on Harvard' - Umlazi teen who won scholarship

A KwaZulu-Natal teenager, through persistence and perseverance, will be attending the prestigious Harvard University in the United States after being accepted on a full scholarship for 2016.

Mfundo Radebe, 18, an Umlazi resident, was awarded an all expenses scholarship worth $69 000 per year to study political sciences. The straight A student spoke to News24, saying it was diligence and a hunger for wanting more that saw him accepted to Harvard.

According to the teen, he planned his future since the tender age of 13 when he was at Addington Primary School.

This was the recollection of Umhlanga Sands Guest Services manager Meresh Sukdeo, who has been lauded as a hero after resuscitating a 7-year-old boy who nearly drowned in the beachfront resort's pool at the weekend.
