NEW: Prince Harry Hands Archbishop Tutu ‘Companions of Honour’

British royal Prince Harry has conferred the ‘Companions of Honour’ on Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. The Arch received the accolade at a meeting in Cape Town this morning.














The royal is in Cape Town as part of a four-day tour of South Africa. The Prince's official visit to South Africa started with a morning meeting with Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu today.

NEW: Still no answers on mysterious green UFO lights in Cape Town

There were still no answers for the mysterious green lights that apparently appeared in the skies above Cape Town at the weekend with some people adamant they had seen an unidentified flying object (UFO) and others blaming a marketing campaign.


















The South African Astronomical Observatory told News24 its understanding was the lights were part of a test for light show equipment at the Cape Town Stadium, based on information it heard mentioned on radio in the morning.

NEW: R25bn Of Irregular Expenditure By Govt Departments

The Auditor General’s (AG) report has shown irregular spending amounting to billions, as well as fruitless and wasteful expenditure in government departments. Kimi Makwetu has released his report on the national and provincial government departments for the 2014/2015 financial year.















Makwetu has revealed major issues around financial maladministration with irregular expenditure amounting to more than R25 billion in the last financial year.

At the same time 72 percent of national and provincial departments did not obtain clean audits, however, this is a 2 percent improvement compared to the previous period.

NEW: Black Coffee launches #FillUpFnb campaign

Multi award-winning DJ Black Coffee has hinted that he is planning on making history by becoming the first South African musician to fill up the 94 000-plus capacity FNB Stadium in April 2016.

Black Coffee’s announcement comes just a month after Hip Hop artist Cassper Nyovest became the first local musician to fill up The Dome. Over 20 000 fans packed the venue to the rafters.















No concert by a local artist or group has ever managed to fill up FNB Stadium but Black Coffee reckons he can pull off a miraculous feat by becoming the first South African artist to fill up the stadium.

MultiChoice is apologising to DStv subscribers over problems with its on demand DStv Catch Up service, saying new software is to blame for viewers not getting all their programming and that it is working on the problem.

NEW: South Africans' Confidence In Zuma Takes A Dive

A survey by Afrobarometer shows the that public’s confidence in President Jacob Zuma is on a significant decline.
















The study also states that the public’s trust of the president has decreased by half in the last four years.

A team of researchers, led by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation and Plus 94 Research, interviewed 2,400 people between August and September.

NEW: Fired Metro FM's Paul Mtirara suing SABC for unfair dismissal

Metro FM DJ Paul Mtirara, one of the radio stations’ star attractions, is suing the SABC for unfair dismissal after he was shown the exit door on Friday, according to a report.















Speaking to Sowetan through his lawyer Graham Moshoana on Tuesday, the smooth-talking Mtirara confirmed he aims to institute a law suit against the SABC, which owns the commercial radio station.

NEW: Reports of ISIS flag flown at home in Durban

Reports of a Pinetown resident flying what appears to be the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) flag at his home in the Durban suburb surfaced on Tuesday just days after the militant group claimed responsibility for attacks in Paris.





















The attacks claimed more than 120 lives.

One of the flags has been erected on a pole and another, appearing to be a printout, has been fixed to a perimeter wall in the residential complex.

Two Zimbabwean female pilots made history when they became the first all woman team to fly from Harare to Victoria Falls.

NEW: 'Dirtbin Durban' has beachgoers in a spin

Broken glass and the stench of urine have returned to Durban’s beachfront after a well-publicised clean-up operation last month.





















Ahead of the Amashova cycle race on October 26, city officials instituted sweeping measures to clean-up certain stretches of the Golden Mile favoured by hundreds of revellers.

With drinking in public and boot parties abounding, the beachfront was left in a mess, raising the ire of beachfront businesses and users alike.

NEW: McDonald's McMouldy meal

One McDonald's customer had a rather unhappy meal on McDonald's 20th anniversary when she found their Grand Chicken Ranch burger was McMouldy.

According to IOL a Mitchell's Plain woman said she bought the burger at the Promenade Mall on Tuesday afternoon and only realised the bun was photosynthesising after taking two bites from it.















“After I took two bites I noticed green dots on the burger and turned it around and found mould all over the bun.

NEW: Tokyo Sexwale lands spot FIFA presidential candidate shortlist

FIFA on Thursday approved five candidates to stand in February's vote to replace Sepp Blatter as president of world football's governing body, but Michel Platini has not yet made the list.














The five who met the qualifications following a series of integrity tests were: Prince Ali Al Hussein, Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Jerome Champagne, Gianni Infantino and Tokyo Sexwale, a FIFA statement said.

The candidacy of Platini, the suspended head of European football who had been the favourite to succeed Blatter, will be examined once his 90-day suspension by FIFA's ethics committee is over.

Senzo Meyiwa’s father, Sam, is furious at Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza for going public with his son’s insurance payout without first informing the family.

Khoza, who was speaking in his capacity as the chairman of the Premier Soccer Leauge (PSL), announced the news at a hastily convened press briefing on Tuesday.


















It became abundantly clear as soon as the briefing started that the League has not informed Meyiwa’s family when Khoza said “as I’m speaking to you the office is in the process of informing the Meyiwa family.”

NEW: Water affairs minister skips Parliament's water crisis meeting

Minister of Water Affairs Nomvula Mokonyane was not present to hear the outrage about South Africa's drought and water crisis at a heated committee meeting in parliament on Wednesday.









 






''In this climate we would have needed her to attend," said DA MP Nosima Balindlela. Mokonyane was away on official business in Iran with Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Without the customary glasses of water at hand because of the strike at parliament, Balindlela expressed condolences to Deputy Minister Pam Tshwete whose mother died at the weekend, but said she expected Mokonyane to have made an effort to attend given that three provinces had already declared disaster zones.

NEW: Twitter storm clouds local toddler's reality talent show win

The three-year-old DJ Arch Jnr made history for being the youngest contestant ever to win SA’s Got Talent.
 














But his victory lap was cut short after a Twitter storm erupted on Tuesday over unplugged cables. The young DJ’s skills have been brought into question after pictures surfaced that showed his AC cables were not connected to the DJ mixer.

NEW: Dinosaur larger than T-Rex found on SA soil

The remains of the largest dinosaurs to ever be found on South African soil were revealed at the Wits University Origins Centre on Tuesday.


















Dr Jonah Choineire, a senior researcher at the Evolutionary Studies Institute, said the remains of the plant-eating creature were found between the border of Lesotho and South Africa just outside of Clarens.

NEW: City Of Joburg Implements Level 2 Water Restrictions

The City of Johannesburg has implemented level two water restrictions after saying last week that restrictions weren’t needed yet.

The city says it will now enforce the water services bylaw.
















Consumers and businesses are urged not to water their gardens between 6am and 6pm and to avoid filling baths and swimming pools.

NEW: Zuma lambasts Motlanthe for 'alliance is dead' comments

President Jacob Zuma launched an attack on former deputy president and ANC veteran Kgalema Motlanthe on Saturday, saying his claim that the tripartite alliance is dead shows that it is he, rather, who is politically bankrupt.














He also took a swipe at Reverent Frank Chikane, who served as director-general in the presidency during Thabo Mbeki’s term of office. Chikane has been a vocal critic of the Zuma administration.

NEW: Only Obama has a better plane than Zuma - political analyst

Only United States of America president Barack Obama has a better plane than what President Jacob Zuma currently has, an academic said on Monday.





















A report by Rapport said that Armscor, the defence ministry's procurement agency, is planning to buy Zuma a new plane that could cost as much as R4bn.

"There are world leaders who have presidential jets, but that's exactly what they are, business jets. They are much smaller than what he [Zuma] has at this stage," University of Pretoria politics lecturer Roland Henwood told News24.

NEW: Toddler bites, kills venomous snake

A 17-month-old boy chewed a venomous snake to death while playing in his family's garden in Mostardas in Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil.

According to RT when his mother, Jaine de Souza found the boy with the snake in his mouth, she shouted for her husband Lucier.

















Both parents took the boy to the Sao Luiz hospital, along with the snake which turned out to be a pit viper, or jararaca.

Eddie Murphy is set to become a father for the ninth time next May, as his girlfriend of three years Paige Butcher is pregnant with their first child together.


















The 54-year-old actor has confirmed his Australian model girlfriend Paige Butcher is pregnant with their first child together after three years of dating.

The 36-year-old beauty is due to give birth next May and the comedian ''couldn't be happier.'' A source told the Daily Mail Online: ''Eddie really is a family man and loves all of his children, so he's so excited about having another one on the way.''

NEW: Idi Amin star to play Tutu. Really

Local actors seem to have again been snubbed in favour of Hollywood's Oscar winners Forest Whitaker and Vince Vaughn, who will star in the lead roles in a film set in post-apartheid South Africa.












 



News broke yesterday that Whitaker will play Desmond Tutu in the long-awaited film The Archbishop and the Antichrist,an adaptation of Michael Ashton's play of the same name. It details Tutu's meetings with murderer Piet Blomfield, played by Vaughn, who seeks redemption for crimes committed while serving a life sentence.

The film shows conversations between Tutu, who headed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and Blomfield, an Afrikaner killer and former member of an apartheid death squad.

NEW: Learner driver pays R3 500 for licence

A licensing official and a driving school instructor were arrested in a sting operation after taking a R3 500 bribe from a driver's licence applicant, the City of Cape Town confirmed on Wednesday.






















The council’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and the Hawks were behind the sting operation on Tuesday where the duo was arrested on a charge of corruption, officials said in a statement.
